WOMEN AND VICTIM EMPOWERMENT

The women and victim empowerment sub-programme aims at empowering women, families and communities on issues relating to domestic violence and gender equity. These services are provided through counselling and programmes for women and the Department also subsidises shelters for abused women and their children. The Department is also taking the lead in the development of a provincial strategy for victim empowerment and an inter-sectoral workshop to plan this strategy was held in February 2004.

A Provincial Victim Empowerment forum is also chaired by the Department and includes various other Departments as well as NGO’s. A successful event to celebrate Women’s Day was held at Enseleni on 11 August 2003.

This is also a cross-cutting sub-programme which is incorporated into other services. A number of programmes have been implemented in the year 2003/4 including volunteer support networks, advocacy and awareness raising on human rights issues, life skills programmes for youth and anger management programmes.
