Services for our Communities

NATIONAL INTEGRATED PROGRAMME FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH AFFECTED AND INFECTED BY HIV/AIDS.

The Department continued to render holistic, integrated and comprehensive services to children, youth and families infected and/or affected by HIV/AIDS. The year 2003/4 marked the third phase of the home /community based care and support programme and realised a major roll-out of the programme. The programme was funded through a conditional grant of R11, 996 million which was made available by the national Department of Social Development and all funds were expended.

Drop-in centres

Drop-in centres developed in the year 2001/2 were supported with an amount of R278 500. These are:

  • Holy Cross, Emoyeni

  • Bhambayi

  • Enduduzweni, Stanger

  • Khanyiselani, Kokstad

  • Thandukuphila, Enseleni

  • Impendle

  • Ndumo.



Drop-in centres developed in the year 2002/3 were supported with an amount of R278 500. These are:

  • Ithembalesizwe, Hlabisa

  • Ubombo

  • Mandeni

  • Khayalempilo, Maphumulo

  • Ikhambi, Umbumbulu

  • Sinozwelo, Msinga

  • Philani, Nqutu

  • Ntokozweni, Port Shepstone

  • Richmond



The following new drop-in centres were developed in the year 2003/4 and each received R307 000 as start-up capital:

  • Siyaphambili Ngxongwane, Nongoma

  • Good News, Lindelani

  • Ubumbano, Umlazi

  • Vusisizwe, Pinetown

  • Clare Estate

  • Mbonge, Harding

  • Phungashe

  • Siyaphambili, Sweetwaters

  • Kwa Hilda, sizweni

  • Estcourt

  • Bergville

  • Siputhando, Dundee

  • Mpilonhle, Ladysmith

  • DonnybrookThembalethu, Nkandla

  • Vukuzakhe, Hluhluwe



The Department also supported seven NGO’s rendering similar services. These were:

  • Philisani, Kwa Dlangezwa

  • NOAH, Eshowe

  • Assisi Sicelimpilo, Port Shepstone

  • NOAH, Swayimani

  • Sukumawenze, Inanda

  • New Horizons

  • Midlands Educational Trust



Training of volunteers

The Department also engaged in a programme of collaboration with the KZN Traditional Leaders HIV/AIDS Task Team. The aim is the development of information centres at all traditional courts. The first issue that was addressed was the training of youth to man these centres. Forty-seven youth were trained during the reporting period. They were drawn from three regional authorities, namely Simdlangentsha, Umbumbulu and Mpumalanga. The training sessions were conducted together with the Departments of Health and Agriculture.
