SERVICES TO THE DISABLED
The aim of this sub-programme is to promote the provision of comprehensive transformed services to the disabled. This is achieved through the provision of services e.g. counselling, residential care for those persons requiring full-time care, protective workshops and sheltered employment. The provision of protective workshops is aimed at providing skills to those with disabilities as well as encouraging a greater degree of independence and providing opportunities for socialisation and normalisation.
The Department participates in the Provincial Forum on Disability which is an inter-sectoral forum.
The Department runs two centres which provide sheltered employment to people with disabilities. These are:
Efforts at the transformation of this centre continue and a transformation plan is being implemented. The transformation of the centre is aimed at greater independence of the clients at the centre as well as more use of the centre for short term skills training.
The primary function of this centre is to teach marketable skills to blind and partially sighted persons.
