SERVICES FOR THE AGED
The aim of this sub programme is to ensure the provision of effective, efficient and equitable social welfare services to the elderly. This includes counselling services, the provision of residential care for frail aged as well as services to maintain older persons in the community e.g. service centres and luncheon clubs.
The policy, both nationally and provincially, is to keep aged persons within their communities. Service centres and luncheon clubs provide an invaluable service by ensuring that the elderly are given food and other welfare services within the community. The Department is faced with a challenge of expanding this service to rural areas and informal settlements.
The Department administers one institution for the aged, i.e. Kwabadala Old Age Home at Nkandla. This facility has a capacity of 101 residents.
During the year under review, a new method of screening residents for admission to homes and subsidisation which was developed nationally was implemented after training was provided in all regions.
