MEC - Department of Social Welfare & Population Development
The MEC has a long political history within the ANC.
He has been a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature since 1994.
He was Chief Whip and was Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Public Works. The MEC was very instrumental and is known for his role in bringing about peace in the community of Mpumalanga for which he received an award. He has also acted as a mediator in conflict situations such as in Burundi, Rwanda, Northern Ireland and Sri Lanka.
He won the African Peace Award in 1993, was given the Dr Martin Luther King Peace Award and honour was bestowed upon him by the Council of Churches in the same year. He holds an honorary Doctorate from University of Cape Town (UCT).
He is married with eight children.
